All That Glitters

Lately, I've been inspired by glitter. Maybe it's the twinkling Christmas lights or the thought of snow. Whatever it is, I definitely want to incorporate touches of sparkle throughout our wedding.

Pretty Maids All in a Row

After a failed attempt at picking out matching dresses, I decided that bridesmaid dresses are pretty high on the list of Things About Which I Do Not Care. I told the girls that they may choose any dress they want as long as it is floor-length and grey. I thought that maybe it would be weird to have them both wearing mismatched dresses since there are only two of them, but then I decided that I don't care. They're both pretty hot and have awesome style, so I trust that they'll look great. But don't take my word for it.

Mismatched J.Crew bridesmaid dresses. The bride is even rocking my dream dress!

I love the flowery strap and the black sash. It looks a lot like this dress.
Such a cute picture!

Fellow Chicagoans dig the grey look.

The Honeymooners

I know several people who planned their honeymoons before they planned anything having to do with the wedding. Clearly Adam and I are not like those people because 4 months of our engagement have passed with barely a thought to where we want to go. Our only requirements for a destination are:
  1. Nothing too far away because we want to come back to Chicago the Friday after our wedding
  2. Not in the Caribbean on account of it being hurricane season
  3. Not a place where we feel like we have to spend our time sight-seeing
We started brainstorming options with these requirements in mind.

This is my dream honeymoon destination. How much fun would it be to bring our wedding clothes with us and have a honeymoon photo shoot all around Paris? Sadly, requirements #1 and #3 ruled out Paris as an option for us.

Hawaii is Adam's dream honeymoon location. It would be lovely to spend our days enjoying the sunshine and tropical breeze while sipping mai tais by the pool. Hawaii satisfies #2 and #3, but doesn't satisfy #1.

Napa was one of the first places we thought about when discussing where we should honeymoon. It would be so relaxing to spend a week drinking wine and eating in fantastic restaurants. Plus, the vineyards would be gorgeous in the fall. The only downside is that Adam and I already went to Napa together last summer and we'd prefer to go somewhere new.

Puerto Vallarta, located on Mexico's Pacific coast, satisfies all of our requirements. I've never been to Mexico and think it would amazing to spend a week drinking margaritas and eating guacamole by the pool. Now that a Chicago winter is upon us, I'm loving the idea of sunshine. Adam's not 100% sure about this idea, so we'll see.

New England
Over Thanksgiving, a family friend suggested that we go to New England on our honeymoon. Since it's not a warm-weather destination, we hadn't really thought about it. There may be a slight risk of a hurricane, violating requirement #2, but the risk is MUCH less severe than it would be in the Caribbean. It would be lovely to spend a week at a quaint B&B while enjoying the fall colors and all the fish and chips we can get our hands on. Plus, we could go whale-watching!

Montreal satisfies the romanticism of Paris, but without the jet lag and high price tag. Plus I could practice my French! Adam doesn't believe I really speak it because he always asks me to translate really obscure words that I don't know.

I suppose we'll have to make a decision at some point, but right now I'm having fun dreaming about all the fun places we can go!

The Bridesmaid Dress Hunt Begins

Now that I have selected my ladies, they need pretty clothes to wear.

In September, I found out that renowned bridal designer
Priscilla of Boston would be going out of business at the end of the year. Because of this, they are selling all of their sample gowns for super discounted prices. I got excited because they have really cute bridesmaid dresses. I tried to find this dress in grey.
I got obsessed and started calling every store in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kansas and Arizona that sells Priscilla of Boston. I called the NYC store before our vacation there. No one had it. So sad.

Then, the lady at the Beverly Hills store (I told you I was obsessed!) told me that they were actually still taking orders for this dress, which meant I could get it in grey!
The best part is that the dresses would be $69.99! I immediately called the Priscilla of Boston store in the Chicago suburbs to see if they had the dress in the store. They did! So I made the loooong drive out to Oakbrook Terrace in horrible rush hour traffic to see the dress in person and try it on.
I tried on the sample dress in the color marine.
I liked the detail at the top, and the dress was comfortable and flattering. It was also very supportive for a strapless dress, so the girls wouldn't spend the night pulling up their dresses.
The sample in the store was a navy color, but this is what the dresses would actually look like in grey.

I got excited because I really liked the dresses, and the price was perfect. I told the saleswoman that I wanted to order 2 dresses in pewter. She told me to get the girls' measurements and that the dresses would be $149 apiece.

Wait, what?

Apparently, they were selling their sample dresses out of stock for $69.99, but because these would be ordered from the factory in pewter with the right measurements, they would be $149.

I was rather annoyed that I had driven all the way out to the suburbs to try on the dress with the information that it cost $69. I liked the dress and would've ordered it for $69. For $149, however, I figured we could find something better.

2 is the loneliest number?

I am only having 2 bridesmaids: my sister and my best friend. I agonized over this for a bit, thinking that my "side" would look lonely and that it would look weird to have 3 times as many guys in the wedding party than girls. Plus, think of how fun dress shopping would be for 5 or 6 girls!

The perfectly mismatched-but-coordinated dresses would look a bit odd with only 2 girls.

I have several other lady friends I could have picked to fill things out a bit. In the end, I decided that I didn't want to pick people for the sole purpose of taking up space. I love my friends, and while I'm sure we will find other ways to include them at our wedding, I wanted to keep the wedding party small. Things are logistically difficult when your wedding party looks like this:

I know I'll have a lot of fun with my two beautiful ladies on my wedding day and that I'll have all the love from them that I could ever want. Plus, these ladies look pretty happy with their perfect pair of bridesmaids.

Jenny Yoo

I recently discovered Jenny Yoo's collection of bridal gowns. They're so modern and elegant. I love the simplicity and clean lines. I just might have to make an appointment at their Chicago boutique so I can take a closer look.

10 Months

Molly's to-do list:
  • print save-the-dates
  • go dress shopping!
Adam's to-do list:
  • pick a tuxedo
  • create wedding website
The to-do list is minimal this month due to finals, but we should be able to get everything accomplished.

Why September 29?

We are officially 10 months away from our wedding. Hooray! I can't wait to get married on September 29. But why September 29?

This is why.
Adam went to Notre Dame, and I went to Saint Mary's College. Therefore, we are huge Notre Dame football fans. We go to nearly every home game and have game watch parties with our friends in Chicago for the games we don't attend.

We also wanted to get married in the fall. I didn't want to get married while still in school, so that ruled out spring 2012. I graduate from law school in May and then take the bar exam at the end of July, so summer was out, too. Winter seemed too far away, and we decided that Chicago's unpredictable winter weather was too big of a hassle to deal with anyway. Plus, fall is both Adam's and my favorite season. So fall 2012 it was.

Once we decided on fall 2012, the first place we looked was the ND football schedule. We didn't want our friends to have to sell their tickets to come to our wedding, so home game weekends were eliminated. We also didn't want everyone (ourselves included) huddled around the TV at the reception watching the game, so away game weekends were eliminated. There is only one Saturday in the fall that Notre Dame does not play football, and that day is September 29.

The wedding coordinator at Saint James Chapel laughed when we told her why we chose our date. Fortunately, we're used to people laughing at us for being Notre Dame fans.

How adorable are these?

These are a collaboration between Fig 2. Design and Chicago designer Jess LC. The tags would look lovely on gifts under the tree and the cards would look great in my stocking! ;-)
